Amgen took in $36.8bn ✓ from medicines, royalties and partners in FY2025. Making what it sold cost $12.0bn ✓. What is left is gross profit, the money kept after paying for what was sold. That came to $24.7bn ✓.

Next come the costs of running the company. Research and development took $7.3bn ✓, and selling, marketing and admin took $7.1bn ✓. Other operating costs added $1.3bn ✓. That left operating profit, the profit from the main business, of $9.1bn ✓. Income and costs outside the main business added up to -$0.1bn ✓, and tax took $1.3bn ✓. That left net income of $7.7bn ✓. Put simply, out of every hundred dollars of sales, Amgen kept about $21 ✓ as profit and spent $20 ✓ on research.

📈How is Amgen doing?

Amgen's sales are growing, and since October 2023 they include the medicines it added by buying Horizon 11. Sales reached $36.8bn ✓ in FY2025, up 10.0% ✓ on FY2024. In FY2024 they jumped 18.6% ✓. That was the first full year after Amgen bought Horizon Therapeutics in October 2023 11. In 2025, Repatha sales rose 36% 12 and Evenity sales rose 34% 12. Enbrel sales fell 33%, mainly because its net selling price fell 2.

In the four quarters to 30 June 2026, sales reached $38.1bn ✓, up 9.1% ✓ on the four quarters before. Operating margin was 30.0% ✓, and free cash flow was $10.2bn ✓. In the third quarter of 2026, total revenues rose 8% to $10.4 billion compared with a year earlier 4. Product sales grew 8%, driven by volume growth 4. The operating margin in that quarter was 37.5% 4. Prolia and Xgeva sales fell 45% and 47% in that quarter, as several copies launched around the world 4.

From FY2015 to FY2025, a span that includes the Horizon purchase in October 2023 11, sales grew 5.4% ✓ a year on average. Sales rose in 8 ✓ of those 10 ✓ years. Gross margin fell from 80.5% ✓ in FY2015 to 75.7% ✓ in FY2022, the last full year before Horizon, and was 67.2% ✓ in FY2025.

📝 The report card

Amgen earns top marks for cash, good marks for growth, profit and steadiness, and a failing mark for its heavy debt. Every company is graded on the same fixed scale, so an A means the same thing on every page. The strip shows where Amgen (orange) and its 4 peers land; further right is better.

B

Growth

Sales growth per year, last 3 fiscal years
11.8% · peer median 2.4%
#2 of 5 in the peer group
A ≥ 15.0%B ≥ 10.0%C ≥ 5.0%D ≥ 0.0%F below 0.0%

Amgen's sales grew 11.8% ✓ a year over its last three fiscal years, which earns a B ✓ on the fixed scale. Those years include the medicines Amgen added when it bought Horizon in October 2023 11. Lilly grew faster, at 31.7% ✓ a year, an A ✓. The peer median was just 2.4% ✓.

Why this measure? (higher is better)

Growing sales is the engine of a business. Mature giants rarely grow fast, so 5% a year already earns a C.

B

Profitability

Operating margin, last 3 years combined
24.6% · peer median 22.9%
#2 of 5 in the peer group
A ≥ 30.0%B ≥ 20.0%C ≥ 10.0%D ≥ 5.0%F below 5.0%

Over the last three years combined, Amgen kept 24.6% ✓ of sales as operating profit, a B ✓. That is above the 22.9% ✓ peer median. Lilly kept 31.6% ✓, enough for an A ✓.

Why this measure? (higher is better)

Operating margin is the share of each sales dollar left after running the business. Software and platforms often clear 30%; hardware makers usually sit below 10%.

A

Cash generation

Free cash flow as a share of sales, last 3 years combined
26.3% · peer median 16.8%
#2 of 5 in the peer group
A ≥ 20.0%B ≥ 15.0%C ≥ 10.0%D ≥ 5.0%F below 5.0%

Over the last three years combined, Amgen turned 26.3% ✓ of sales into free cash flow, an A ✓. That is well above the 16.8% ✓ peer median. Only AbbVie did better, at 33.6% ✓. In FY2025 alone, the figure was 22.0% ✓.

Why this measure? (higher is better)

Free cash flow is the cash left after paying for factories, data centres and equipment. It funds dividends, buybacks and new bets.

F

Balance sheet

Net cash (cash and investments minus borrowings; leases and stakes in other companies not counted) as a share of a year's sales
-123.7% · peer median -70.5%
#5 of 5 in the peer group
A ≥ 20.0%B ≥ 5.0%C ≥ -10.0%D ≥ -30.0%F below -30.0%

At the end of FY2025, Amgen's net cash (cash and investments minus borrowings; leases and stakes in other companies not counted) was -123.7% ✓ of a year's sales, an F ✓. Put simply, it owed much more than it held. Every peer fails this test too: Lilly gets an F ✓, Merck an F ✓, Pfizer an F ✓ and AbbVie an F ✓. Amgen's figure is the lowest of the five, below the -70.5% ✓ peer median. To pay for Horizon, Amgen issued $24.0 billion of notes in 2023 and borrowed $4.0 billion under a term loan 11. In 2025 it retired $6.0 billion of debt 16.

Why this measure? (higher is better)

More cash than debt gives a company room to ride out bad years. Some debt is normal; a lot of it makes a company fragile.

B

Steadiness

How much yearly sales growth swings (standard deviation, up to 10 years)
6.0% · peer median 13.7%
#1 of 5 in the peer group
A ≤ 5.0%B ≤ 8.0%C ≤ 12.0%D ≤ 18.0%F above 18.0%

Amgen's yearly growth swings less than any peer's, with a standard deviation of 6.0% ✓, which earns a B ✓. Its biggest jump was 18.6% ✓ in FY2024, the first full year after the Horizon deal 11. Merck is next, at 8.5% ✓, which earns a C ✓.

Why this measure? (lower is better)

Steady growers are easier to plan around. Big swings mean sales depend on product cycles, the economy or one-off events.

🧑‍🏫 How the grades work
  1. Same scale for everyone. Each measure has fixed cut-offs (shown under each strip). Clear the A line and you get an A, whatever your peers do.
  2. Three years together. Profitability and cash generation add up the last three fiscal years before dividing, so one unusual year counts for less than it would on its own (a year much bigger than the others still weighs most).
  3. Peers for context. The rank shows how Amgen compares with the group. Companies within 0.1 percentage point share a rank.
  4. Same source. Every company's figures come from its own latest annual report (10-K), so fiscal years end in different months.
  5. Judgement, openly stated. The cut-offs are QuantVantage.ai's view of what good looks like for a large, established company. They are not a forecast or a recommendation.

🧮Ratios 101: what are Amgen's key financial ratios?

Ratios shrink Amgen's big numbers into easy comparisons, and several of them show how much it has borrowed. The FY2015 figures come from before Amgen bought Horizon in October 2023 11. A ratio divides one number by another so companies of any size can be compared. Each card shows the formula with Amgen's real FY2025 numbers, the peer median and the trend.

🧭Amgen SWOT: strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats

💪 Strengths

  • Seventeen Amgen medicines were selling at a yearly rate of more than $1 billion in the third quarter of 2026 4.
  • Over the last three years combined, Amgen turned 26.3% ✓ of sales into free cash flow, an A ✓.
  • In a Phase 3 trial reported in November 2025, Repatha cut the relative risk of heart deaths, heart attacks or strokes by 25% 25. The trial was in high-risk adults who had not yet had a heart attack or stroke 25.
  • Amgen says it is a leader in making biologics, which need highly specialized know-how to make reliably at scale 23.

🩹 Weaknesses

  • Amgen's net cash was -$45.5bn ✓ at the end of FY2025, meaning it owed far more than it held. Operating profit covered interest only 3.3x ✓ that year.
  • Patents on Prolia and Xgeva expired in 2025 1. In the third quarter of 2026, their sales fell 45% and 47% as several copies launched 4.
  • Enbrel sales fell 33% in 2025, mainly because its net selling price fell 36% 2.
  • Amgen does most of its commercial manufacturing in Puerto Rico, which remains at risk from natural disasters; Amgen lists this as a supply risk 23.

🚀 Opportunities

  • MariTide, Amgen's obesity candidate, may need as few as four or six doses a year once a patient is on it, Amgen says 18. Two Phase 3 obesity studies were under way on 3 November 2026 18.
  • Some medicines are growing fast: in the third quarter of 2026, Imdelltra sales rose 128% and Uplizna sales rose 191% 4.
  • In September 2026, a Phase 3 study found that adding Imdelltra to AstraZeneca's Imfinzi helped people with a form of lung cancer live longer 21.
  • Pavblu, Amgen's copy of the eye medicine Eylea, made $300 million in the third quarter of 2026, up 41% 264.

⚠️ Threats

  • Medicare price setting began for Enbrel in 2026 and applies to Otezla from 2027 21. Enbrel's net selling price was 14% lower in the third quarter of 2026 4.
  • In July 2026, Amgen found unauthorized activity in cloud systems hosted by outside providers, and some data, including patient health information, was taken 27.
  • As of September 2026, the IRS was seeking about $3.6 billion and $5.1 billion of extra tax for 2010-2012 and 2013-2015, plus interest 28. The dispute is before the US Tax Court 28.
  • In April 2026 an FDA center proposed withdrawing approval of Tavneos. Amgen asked for a hearing on 1 June 2026, and as of September 2026 Tavneos stayed on the market while the process continued 28.

🏰Does Amgen have a moat?

Narrow moatAmgen calls its skill in making biologics an advantage 23, but key Prolia and Xgeva patents expired in 2025 1, and Medicare price setting began with Enbrel in 2026 21.
Brand 3/5
Why 3?

Amgen says copies compete on price, but it believes many patients, doctors and payers will keep valuing its products' reputation, steady supply and safety 10. Still, when several copies arrived, Prolia sales fell 45% in the third quarter of 2026 4. Seventeen Amgen products were selling at a yearly rate of more than $1 billion in that quarter 4.

Switching costs 3/5
Why 3?

Amgen says that once several copies of one of its medicines launch, competition heats up fast and net prices fall faster for both its product and the copies 10. Prolia and Xgeva sales fell 45% and 47% in the third quarter of 2026 as copies launched 4. Sensipar lost a big share of its market very quickly to generic pills 10.

Network effects 1/5
Why 1?

One patient taking an Amgen medicine does not make it better for anyone else. In the US, substantially all of Amgen's sales go to drug wholesalers, and three of them made up 77% of its worldwide gross revenues in 2025 22.

Cost advantages and scale 3/5
Why 3?

Amgen calls its biologics manufacturing a competitive advantage 23. It says its newer plants in North Carolina and Ohio were built faster and at lower cost than traditional plants 23. It runs its own plants in Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Ohio, California, Ireland, the Netherlands and Singapore 23. It also sells biosimilars of other companies' medicines and has launched eight since 2018 10. Seventeen of its products were selling at a yearly rate of more than $1 billion in the third quarter of 2026 4.

Intangibles (patents, licences, regulation) 3/5
Why 3?

Newer medicines have longer patents: Amgen's latest-expiring listed US patents run to 2032 for Repatha, 2036 for Imdelltra and 2038 for Tezspire; for Repatha and Tezspire these cover methods of treatment 24. But Prolia and Xgeva patents expired in 2025 1. Evenity's US antibody patent expired in April 2026, though its US formulation and treatment-method patents run to 2031 and 2033 24. Medicare price setting began for Enbrel in 2026 and starts for Otezla in 2027 21. Enbrel's net selling price was 14% lower in the third quarter of 2026 4.

A moat is what keeps rivals from taking a company's customers and profits. Scores are QuantVantage.ai's judgement (5 = strongest), set with the same rubric on every explainer (orange is Amgen; grey dots are peers).
