For a bank, revenue means what is left after paying interest to savers. JPMorgan's revenue was $182.4bn ✓ in FY2025. It comes from two engines 3. The first is net interest income: the bank earns more interest on loans and bonds than it pays on deposits. The second is noninterest revenue, such as fees for advice, card fees and trading for clients.

Deposits are the money people and companies keep at the bank. JPMorgan held $2.78tn of them at 30 September 2026, and its loans equalled 57% of its deposits 4.

Running costs, such as pay, technology, marketing and branches, took $95.6bn ✓. Next, the bank set aside $14.2bn ✓ for loans that may not be repaid. That included $2.2bn tied to its commitment to buy the Apple Card portfolio 5. Pretax profit was $72.6bn ✓. After tax of $15.5bn ✓, JPMorgan kept $57.0bn ✓ as profit. Out of every $100 of revenue, about $52 ✓ went on running costs, $8 ✓ on loan losses and $9 ✓ on tax. JPMorgan kept $31 ✓.

Out of every $100 of revenue in FY2025…

Running costs (staff, offices, technology) $52Loan losses $8Income tax $9Profit kept $31
💡
In the third quarter of 2026, interest brought in more than fees and trading. Net interest income was $27.1bn, up 13% on a year earlier, while noninterest revenue was $23.8bn, up 3% 3. Managed revenue for the quarter was $50.9bn 3.

📈How is JPMorgan Chase doing?

JPMorgan has grown every year for a decade. From FY2015 to FY2025, revenue grew 6.9% ✓ a year on average. It rose in 10 ✓ of those 10 ✓ years. JPMorgan says 2025 was its eighth record revenue year in a row 49. Profit grew faster, from $24.4bn ✓ in FY2015 to $57.0bn ✓ in FY2025. The share of revenue left as pretax profit rose from 32.8% ✓ to 39.8% ✓.

The four quarters to June 2026 look even stronger. Revenue reached $199.4bn ✓, up 13.5% ✓ on the four quarters before. Profit was $65.1bn ✓. That includes the second quarter of 2026, when JPMorgan booked a $4.6bn net gain on its Visa shares 3239. In the third quarter of 2026, profit was $15.3bn, up 6% on a year earlier 3. Revenue rose 9% in Consumer & Community Banking 3. It rose 14% in the Commercial & Investment Bank 3 and 14% in Asset & Wealth Management 3.

📝 The report card

JPMorgan earns top marks for profit, good marks for growth and steadiness, and a middling mark for its equity cushion. Cash generation is not graded ✓ for banks. Every company is graded on the same fixed scale, so an A means the same thing on every page. The strip shows where JPMorgan Chase (orange) and its 5 peers land; further right is better.

B

Growth

Revenue growth per year, last 3 fiscal years
12.3% · peer median 6.0%
#1 of 6 in the peer group
A ≥ 15.0%B ≥ 10.0%C ≥ 5.0%D ≥ 0.0%F below 0.0%

JPMorgan's revenue grew 12.3% ✓ a year over its last three fiscal years, which earns a B ✓. That ranked number 1 of the six banks ✓, well above the 6.0% ✓ peer median. FY2023 alone jumped 22.9% ✓.

Why this measure? (higher is better)

Growing revenue is the engine of a business. For a bank, revenue is what it earns after paying interest to savers and lenders; for an insurer, it is mostly premiums. Mature giants rarely grow fast, so 5% a year already earns a C.

A

Profitability

Return on equity (profit ÷ shareholders' equity), last 3 years combined
15.9% · peer median 11.0%
#1 of 6 in the peer group
A ≥ 15.0%B ≥ 12.0%C ≥ 9.0%D ≥ 6.0%F below 6.0%

Over the last three years combined, JPMorgan earned 15.9% ✓ profit on its owners' money, just enough for an A ✓. That beat the 11.0% ✓ peer median. Citigroup earned only 5.8% ✓, which gets an F ✓.

Why this measure? (higher is better)

Banks and insurers work with other people's money, so profit margins on revenue say little. Return on equity shows how much profit they make on the owners' money; above 15% is excellent for a big bank or insurer.

–

Cash generation

Not graded

Not graded for banks and insurers: their cash flow mostly moves customers' money (deposits, loans, premiums), so it says little about the business.

Cash generation is not graded ✓ for banks. A bank's cash flow mostly shows customers' money moving in and out. JPMorgan's operating cash flow swung from $107.1bn ✓ in FY2022 to -$147.8bn ✓ in FY2025, which says little about how the business did.

C

Balance sheet

Shareholders' equity as a share of total assets
8.2% · peer median 8.0%
#3 of 6 in the peer group
A ≥ 12.0%B ≥ 10.0%C ≥ 8.0%D ≥ 6.0%F below 6.0%

Shareholders' equity was 8.2% ✓ of everything JPMorgan owned at the end of FY2025, which earns a C ✓. That is close to the 8.0% ✓ peer median. Regulators use a different test called CET1. JPMorgan's was an estimated 13.9% at 30 September 2026 3, above its 11.5% requirement 12.

Why this measure? (higher is better)

Owners' equity is the cushion that absorbs losses before customers' money is at risk. The thicker the cushion compared with everything the company owns, the safer it is.

B

Steadiness

How much yearly revenue growth swings (standard deviation, up to 10 years)
6.4% · peer median 6.8%
#3 of 6 in the peer group
A ≤ 5.0%B ≤ 8.0%C ≤ 12.0%D ≤ 18.0%F above 18.0%

The standard deviation of JPMorgan's yearly growth rate is 6.4% ✓, counted in percentage points, which earns a B ✓. Bank of America, at 3.8% ✓, earns an A ✓. JPMorgan's big jump of 22.9% ✓ in FY2023 adds to its swing.

Why this measure? (lower is better)

Steady growers are easier to plan around. Big swings mean revenue depends on interest rates, markets or one-off events.

🧑‍🏫 How the grades work
  1. Same scale for everyone. Each measure has fixed cut-offs (shown under each strip). Clear the A line and you get an A, whatever your peers do.
  2. Three years together. Profitability and cash generation add up the last three fiscal years before dividing, so one unusual year counts for less than it would on its own (a year much bigger than the others still weighs most).
  3. Banks and insurers are graded differently. They lend or invest customers' money, so profitability uses return on equity, the balance sheet uses the owners' share of total assets, and cash generation is not graded. They are compared only with other banks and insurers.
  4. Peers for context. The rank shows how JPMorgan Chase compares with the group. Companies within 0.1 percentage point share a rank.
  5. Same source. Every company's figures come from its own latest annual report (10-K), so fiscal years end in different months.
  6. Judgement, openly stated. The cut-offs are QuantVantage.ai's view of what good looks like for a large, established company. They are not a forecast or a recommendation.

Where the cash goes

JPMorgan hands much of its profit back to shareholders. From FY2015 to FY2025 it spent $294.2bn ✓ on dividends and buybacks. In FY2025 alone it paid out $48.2bn ✓, or 84.5% ✓ of profit. In the third quarter of 2026 it made only $664m of net buybacks 3. Jamie Dimon said it cut buybacks to keep capital for investing in the business and serving clients 3.

🧮Ratios 101: what are JPMorgan Chase's key financial ratios?

Ratios shrink JPMorgan's giant numbers into easy comparisons. For a bank, profit on the owners' money and on total assets matter most. • Costs are rising fast: in the third quarter of 2026, expenses were 12% higher than a year earlier, mainly on higher pay 3.
  • Corporate results swing, such as $658m of net losses on investment securities in the third quarter of 2026 3.
  • Jamie Dimon has led the firm as CEO since December 2005 40. In June 2026 the board named two Co-Presidents as part of its succession planning 41.
  • At the end of fiscal 2025 it remained under a March 2024 OCC consent order about checks on its trade surveillance data 37.

🚀 Opportunities

  • Chase will become the issuer of Apple Card, bringing over $20bn of card balances 34. Closing is expected about 24 months after December 2025, subject to approvals 3934.
  • Asset & Wealth Management drew $263bn of client asset net inflows in the third quarter of 2026 3.
  • It keeps opening branches, reaching 5,164 at 30 September 2026, up from 5,018 a year earlier 4.

⚠️ Threats

  • A deep recession would raise loan losses. In its own 2026 stress test, JPMorgan projected $70.2bn of loan losses over nine quarters 42.
  • Lower interest rates cut Corporate's net interest income by $737m in the third quarter of 2026 3.
  • Under current rules, its extra capital charge as one of the biggest banks rises to 5.5% in 2028 39.
  • Internet-only firms and non-financial companies keep moving into finance 43.
  • Lawsuits over card fees and cash sweep accounts are still running 44 44.

🏰Does JPMorgan Chase have a moat?

Wide moatHuge size, a vast deposit base and large client balances protect JPMorgan, though as one of the biggest banks it must hold extra capital 17 4 43 539.
Brand 4/5
Why 4?

JPMorgan serves customers under two brands, Chase and J.P. Morgan 3. It says it ranked first in US retail deposits for the sixth year in a row 3. Industry league tables ranked it first in global investment banking fees in 2025 5. Card annual fees grew more than 30% in the second quarter of 2026, which it linked to demand for premium cards 32.

Switching costs 4/5
Why 4?

Client deposits in its Payments and Securities Services businesses averaged $1.22tn in the third quarter of 2026, up 10% on a year earlier 43. It also held $44.1tn of assets in custody at 30 September 2026 24. JPMorgan linked its card fee growth to healthy customer retention 32.

Network effects 3/5
Why 3?

Its payments business helps companies move money and manage cash around the world 2. Chase had 64.9m active mobile customers at 30 September 2026 4. But Zelle is run by a company that a group of big US banks owns together 33. The Apple Card will stay on Mastercard's network 34.

Cost advantages and scale 4/5
Why 4?

Its main bank had $4,091bn of assets at 30 June 2026, far ahead of Bank of America's $2,655bn 17. At that date it had 5,137 US branches, more than Wells Fargo, Bank of America or Citibank 17. In the third quarter of 2026 its costs were 54% of revenue, against 58.5% at Citigroup, 63% at Wells Fargo and 66% at Bank of America (62% excluding a settlement charge) 3183536.

Intangibles (patents, licences, regulation) 3/5
Why 3?

Its acquisitions need regulators' approval 37. Deposit insurance covers savers up to $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category, at each insured bank 38. As one of the biggest banks, it must also hold an extra capital charge of 4.5% for 2026 539. A March 2026 proposal would change how much capital it must hold 39.

A moat is what keeps rivals from taking a company's customers and profits. Scores are QuantVantage.ai's judgement (5 = strongest), set with the same rubric on every explainer (orange is JPMorgan Chase; grey dots are peers).
